Individual Assignment #4, due February 26

Blackboard Individual Assignment #4
Due on or before TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26

In the "student edition" of the premium content site, go to the Manager's Hot Seat section and complete Scenario #10--Diversity: Mediating Morality.

Review the profiles, references, scenario, and dossier before you create your report evaluating how Syl Tang handled the situation. Be sure to answer the multiple choice questions in the conference scenario video itself, since THESE REPONSES WILL BECOME PART OF YOUR DISCUSSION SECTION POSTING.

Once you see the assessment on your screen, YOU SHOULD SELECT *EMAIL* ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.   THEN COPY/PASTE THE TEXT COMPARING YOUR ANSWERS WITH SYL'S INTO YOUR ASG04 POSTING in the discussion section of Blackboard.

To complete this posting, write a short report analyzing the situation in your own words.  Then add it--along with the responses--into a Blackboard discussion entry.  Please note in this case, as in others, that the manager's actions may not always reflect the most appropriate choice.  For instances in which your response and the manager's differ--or even when they are in alignment--you will probably want to support your own position.

Use Asg04 as the subject line of your discussion thread for this assignment.

Some more exam 1a questions and answers

Below are three clicker questions I have struggled to find the answers too. If you could provide me with the correct answers that would be helpful.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. _______ is an example of a middle manager.

A. An NFL owner.
B. A U.S. Supreme Court justice.
C. A UAlbany college dean.
D. All the above.
E. None of the above.

The answer to this was C, but I asked it before we discussed these levels of management.  (We also had to explain how the NFL works, whether management is a key function of a supreme court justice, and the culture and structure of our University.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. In order to grow quickly, Burke Franklin’s business would be well served to organize as a(n) _______ .

A. functional design.
B. divisional organization.
C. hybrid structure.
D. matrix organization.
E. none of the above.

Burke Franklin, of the Jian case covered in class, structured it as (E)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. What company might you think of as having stated these values of Respect, Integrity, Communication, and Excellence?

A. Toyota
B. General Motors
C. Enron
D. WorldCom
E. All of the above

This was a trick question.  Its answer is discussed in the session 06 video.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Should we be studying the websites from the homeworks as well? Thank you.

Answer:  As long as you've done Asg02 and especially Asg03, you'll know whatever you need from them on the exam.

Exam 1a instructions and several student questions

Here are the exam instructions.  (Note number 4 in particular, since there are always one or two students who fail to follow it and end up being penalized by losing 3 points on their exam grades.)

Several student questions are appended with my answers.   ...mf

EXAM DAY INSTRUCTIONS

YOU MAY NOT REMOVE

THIS TEST FROM THE ROOM.

DO NOT OPEN THE QUESTION PACKET

UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO.

1.  Sit in every second—usually odd-numbered—seat of your assigned row (check the projector screen), starting with the seats on the aisles on the “non-podium” side of the room.
2.  Only the exam and your pencils should be on the table.  Place all other belongings, including cell phones, in your bag on the floor, preferably under your seat.
3.  On the answer sheet, you may start bubbling in your name and ID right away.  Write your full name on this sheet, the next page, and side 1 of the answer sheet, all last name first.
4.  After you are told to open the question packet, you will find the version number above the date at the top of the first question page.
5. Pay attention to any other instructions you are given.
Please read and sign the following declaration:  Outside of normal class and online materials, I certify that I obtained no advance knowledge of any exam questions or content.  I understand that I should fill in and code my name and id number, not my social security number, before I begin taking the exam.  Missing or incorrect entries for (1) my ID number, (2) my name, and/or (3) the exam version number may cause my exam grade to be reduced by 3 points.

Question: In the 'Organizational Culture Overview' section (classes 3 & 6), for how to change a corporate culture, all that i am 100% sure is by John Kotter are the 8 steps for strong leaders. In the textbook there are also no other items that directly say they are Kotter's ideas. i'm just wondering if I am missing key information here?

Answer: Those steps are the ones that apply.  The session 6 online lecture discusses strong leaders in their context as agents of culture change.   Kotter's 8 steps are also discussed in greater detail in chapter 14 (Change Management).

Q: Under class 4, 'Change and Learning Organizations' I do not know what you mean by "levels and categories of change". I don't see anything regarding this in my in-class notes, your powerpoints, or the textbook. Also under class 4, both the textbook and the powerpoint slides mention the systems model of change, but in your review slides it is not listed and according to my class notes, it does not look like we went over it in class. Will it be included in the required information to know for the exam?

A: The video case we did in class, Marshall Industries, presented two levels of change:  incremental change and the deeper type associated with major system implementations or other innovations such as the elimination of individual sales commissions. I sometimes refer to extreme cases of that latter, "game changing" level as "paradigmatic" change.    "Categories of change" is more or less synonymous with "target elements of change," which you should know.

Q: I was wondering is there certain or must videos we need to watch for the exam, if there is can you please list them?
A: Videos and other files numbered 01-07 on ERes or educreations were mostly required by their sessions' dates.  If the name of a video or any file starts with "Exam 1a," it was put there to help all students include some very important material in their study efforts.

The following 2 files have been added to Electronic Reserve:
I regret that we did not get through everything I intended today, particularly in the 10:15 class.  Our pace will return to normal next Thursday.

Some items re exam 1a

"Exam 1a" review slides are now available on electronic reserve, and related video exam review tutorials--each consisting of just one slide with my voice-over summary--are accessible via educreations.com.

Files of Exam 1a-related clicker questions from sessions 1-7 should also be on ERes sometime tomorrow p.m.

...From a very alert student:

Question:  In the Power Point titled "06 (for 2/12 virtual session) Add'l Aspects of Organizational Culture and Design (notes for online presentation)" one of the slides confused me. On slide 8, classifying corporate culture, the chart and the notes to the slide do not match. For example, based on the chart a clan would be a controlled environment with internal focus. However the note to the slide says " Clan Culture -Internal focus and flexible - A friendly workplace where leaders act like father figures."  Could you please tell me which is right, the slide or the note to the slide.

Answer: The table is wrong, and apologies for the typo.  Here's the corrected slide ....

(If your email client cannot display this jpeg, all these messages are archived on our course blog, accessible via Blackboard and ERes.) --------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Hi professor Fogelman, is there a special order we should be watching these videos in? I received 6 videos. Also are they for tomorrows class? Thanks

A: They are not for tomorrow, and after the overview you can watch them in any sequence.

They are review videos for exam 1a.  Please check the file name for each one, which is printed above it in blue.

The pink one is advice that applies to all 3 of our in-term exams. When you watch the overview one, it will inform you which sessions each of the others refers to.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------

I've also discovered a slip of the tongue in the Session 05 flip video introducing  Organizational Design definitions:  The corrected version, consistent with the organizational charts and other statements throughout the course, is that wider spans of control produce a flatter organization--not a taller one.

Hofstede's national culture dimensions-for tomorrow

In our session 07 discussion of different national culture dimensions and their influence on the world of work, we will review slides on that topic from the session 01-02 Powerpoint slides.  Students who like to highlight their slides in class to help prepare for exams will want bring that first set along with them tomorrow.

Blackboard Individual Assignment #3 - Due on or BEFORE FRIDAY, 2/15

Blackboard Individual Assignment #3 - Due on or BEFORE FRIDAY, 2/15

In the "student edition" of the premium content site, go to the Manager's Hot Seat section and complete Scenario #8—Cultural Differences: Let’s Break a Deal.  Review the profiles, references, scenario, and dossier (including communications 1, 2, and 3 accessed on down the left side of that screen) before you create your report evaluating what took place in this episode.

When you post your assignment as a discussion thread on Blackboard it will have 3 very short sections:

  1. Begin your posting with the text of the memo you write in the "create report" section of the hot seat case.
  2. Then indicate how the differences between Japan’s and the United States’ national cultural values affected the interaction between Norio Tukunada and Michael Sokolow.  Refer in this answer to one--more than that if you like--of the Hofstede’s national cultural dimensions.  (These values are outlined in our session 01-02 review slides.)
  3. The third part is based on your answers to the 6 multiple choice questions in the video exercise's SCENARIO section.  You can either summarize in the body of your text how your answers compared with the "actual" case outcomes, or you can  print screen the program's panel that outlines those differences and attach it to your posting.

The subject line should include "Asg03" with no spaces.

Reminder re Tuesday, 2/12: class is online

Please remember what we noted on the syllabus and discussed at the start of the term:  this coming Tuesday's class is an online lecture, one in which I take the role of Mr. George Seiler, the noted organizational culture and leadership guru who passed away about a year ago. The talk on Additional Aspects of Organizational Culture and Design is already posted on ERes, and we will not meet in LC2 that day.  I will be available in BA324 for individuals or groups of students who choose to meet with me during that time.  Copies of the review slides and the two required reading assignments for that class session are also on Electronic Reserve.
